Abrasive Blasting:
Process by which loose abrasive is propelled at a high velocity, via air or paddle wheel.

Blast Cleaning:
Cleaning process using loose abrasive propelled at a high velocity, and aimed at the area to be cleaned. Typically used to remove rust, scale, old paint or any other dry surface contaminant.

Burnishing:
A vibratory finishing or tumble deburring process that imparts a shiny surface on component parts.

Descale:
A cleaning process that removes mill scale or heat treat oxidation.

Degreasing:
To remove grease or oil from the surface of a component.

Deflashing:
To remove flash from a parting line. See Flash.

Flash:
Excess material on molded component resulting from a leakage at tool joints.

Hand Deburring:
Filing, scraping, and/or cutting, using hand tools, to remove burrs and sharp edges.

Micro Finish Improvement:
To change the surface profile, smooth or rough, to achieve a desired outcome. These changes can be quantified using an instrument called a profileometer. See Profileometer.

Preplate Finishing:
Vibratory finishing or tumble deburring process that smoothes and cleans surfaces of components in preparation for electroplating. Often resulting in low micro finish values. See Micro Finish.

Profileometer:
A measuring instrument used to quantify surface profiles Ra, RMS, or Rz Values.

Shot Peening:
A cold-working method accomplished by pelting the surface of a metal part with round metallic shot thrown at high velocity. Each shot acts as a tiny peen-hammer, making a small dent in the surface of the metal and stretching the surface radially as it hits. This results in an equilibrium where the surface fibers are in residual compression, while the inner fibers are in tension. In general, shot peening will lengthen the fatigue life of any part that is subject to bending or twisting stress.

Steel Ball Burnishing:
Surface burnishing process using polished steel media to achieve bright luster.

Straight Lining:
Abrasive belt sanding of metal surfaces to achieve a uniform, one directional grain finish.

Tumble Barrels:
Machines used to tumble deburr. Often six or eight sided with either horizontal or vertical axis.

Tumble Deburring:
Abrasive process that removes sharp edges or burrs, and smoothes surfaces of metal components. Can be done as a wet or dry process. See Tumble Barrels, Tumble Media.

Tumble Media
Abrasive "stones" used in tumble deburring process. Various geometric shapes and sizes, they are commonly made of ceramic, plastic or steel, in several cutting grades, from fast cut to fine finish.

Vibratory Finishing
Abrasive process that removes sharp edges or burrs and smoothes surfaces of metal components using a vibratory bowl or vibratory tub. Vibratory action results from a spinning, counterweighted bearing assembly that transfers torroidal or occilation energy to the mass of media, and components inside the process chamber.

Wheelabrating:
Blasting process using a spinning paddle wheel design to propel abrasive. Blasting equipment made by the Wheelabrator Corporation.
